Jack Reilly - Current Paintings

The Circles

Jack Reilly's circular paintings depict light, color, and illusive pictorial space, on circular shaped canvas structures. The evolution of Reilly's paintings developed over years of working in a shaped-canvas format. These works comment on the evolution of modern and contemporary abstract painting from abstract expressionism to post-painterly abstraction and color field. Reilly's early career began in Los Angeles with a series of museum and gallery exhibitions that led to his recognition as an original artist of the Abstract Illusionism movement and one of the foremost artists working in shaped canvas today. His elegant visual systems, signature brushwork and meticulous technique incorporates acrylic polymers and metallic pigments, resulting in a stunning visual effect that is often compared to the luminance of Gothic stained glass and the visual structure of Byzantine mosaics. The artwork displayed on this page represents Reilly's current work from the ongoing series.

    Surface Detail Views

Each painting is constructed on a circular-shaped canvas structure. The outlying individual bands of polychrome acrylic pigments illustrate Reilly's signature brushwork and surround the soft color fields that fill the interior section of the piece, resulting in visually dynamic and starkly contrasting surface textures.

These circular pieces are constructed on a steel frame with polished stainless steel edges. Broken glass and tile mosaics make up individual bands of color that surround the interior consisting of sprayed hi-gloss automotive enamel. Each piece is completed on both sides and mounted on a stainless steel or marble base.
